I would love to see you jump on the band wagon and tell your members
about a not for profit/non profit grassroots group. Freecycle members
pay it forward each day by giving their unwanted or unneeded items
to those who can use them.
We are now international as well; as more and more groups open
each day. We now number at nearly 200,000 members with over and
900 groups. Pretty amazing since we have no budget for advertising,
no money for anything.
We have done this by just word of mouth, as I hope telling you
about it will do. The readers of your newsletters and web site will
love this idea. The reason it works is the complete simplicity of
it. Our mantra is " Keep It Free, Legal and Appropriate for
all Ages" That is pretty much it in a nutshell.
We hope that by reusing, recycling and freecycling our unwanted
items, we can do our part to help take the huge load off of our
landfills. Freecycle has been featured and mentioned in places such
as People, Time, Newsweek just to name some of the bigger publications.
We hit local papers each day all over the world. This was started
by a man from Tucson, named Deron Beal. He works for a recycling
company there, and saw the tremendous amount of items that still
had life in them hit the trash dumps.
With so many on tight budgets, this does more than that; though
not a charity, we see so many random acts of kindness every day.
Check out a google search or just look at the press releases on
the main site located at http://www.freecycle.org/ People can find
a group near them to join, if no group exists simply contact the
moderator of the one nearest to you and ask about forming a group
in your town. . Right now we operate mainly through yahoo groups,
as they are free, so just within our budget of zero dollars. All
groups are ran by local volunteer moderators, we have a mentor group
that helps new groups get up to speed.
