Kids First Walkathon--New Haven, CT

Hello my name is Vincent Lindsley, I am the P.E. teacher at Columbus School in New Haven, CT. For the last month and a half students as well as faculty members have been preparing for a district wide Walkathon. We have logged miles walked, passed out flyers, and attempted to raise awareness in the areas of fitness and nutrition throughout both the school and community. On Saturday, November 13, 2004, Columbus School took part in the "Kids First Walkathon" at the New Haven Athletic Center. The students that took part received a shirt, a medal, and even a "goodie bag" (no candy, the bag was similar to bags given at road races). I truly feel that the walkers, helpers, spectators, donators, and parents made this a special day that will impact the community for a long time. Lastly I will leave you with a brief summary of Healthy Kids First.

Healthy Kids First is a districtwide initiative that includes greater outreach to families about the importance of quality nutritional habits with educational outreach on healthier food choices to help prevent childhood obesity. Healthy Kids First has replaced junk food and soda in school vending machines with fruit juices, water and healthy snacks. The Healthy Kids First Walkathon was designed as a healthy way to assist schools in fundraising.
