FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, July 13, 2001, St. John’s, NF –
On Wednesday evening over 20 of Newfoundland’s finest entertainers
raised the roof, and over $50,000, at Mile One Stadium in support
of the efforts of the Canadian Red Cross to assist the103 residents
of Rockcliffe Heights who lost nearly all of their material possessions
in the apartment building fire last month.
Nearly 4,500 people were on hand to witness a magical
evening of great music, comedy and good will. “The whole event
was incredible,” said Rhonda Kenney, Regional Director of
the Canadian Red Cross in Newfoundland. “ St. John’s
really came together to support the 45 families who have been affected
by the fire. The Red Cross is very grateful to all of the people
who put this event together and who donated their time and talent
to make it such a success. We especially wish to thank Peter MacKenzie
who was the driving force behind the “Pay It Forward”
benefit.”
“The
funds raised, and more that we are expecting in the coming weeks,
will assist us in meeting the immediate needs of these families,”
said Kenney. “ Our team of staff and volunteers will work
directly with the individuals to determine their needs and help
them get back on their feet. Though we will not be able to take
care of all of their needs, this donation will be of great help.”
Event Organizer,
Peter Mackenzie said the support for this benefit was overwhelming.
“ This amount of money could not have been raised without
the selfless contributions of many people and organizations,”
stressed MacKenzie. “The City covered the rental of Mile One,
Eastern Audio donated all the production, Music Stop threw in the
stage gear, all the media promoted the event for free, 84 entertainers
gave of their time and talent, countless others offered services
and contributions, and nearly 4500 people came out to support the
effort. It is because of this tremendous community effort that we
decided the finale with all the musicians had to be The Ode to Newfoundland.”
Cohen’s
offers to collect furniture
MacKenzie also
noted that much more can be done to help as the money raised, though
substantial, will not be enough to ensure all possessions are replaced.
“I would guess that we raised about 10% of the value of the
items that were destroyed by fire, smoke or water”, he said.
“Those who wish to also contribute, please get in touch with
The Red Cross or if you have excess furniture that is in good repair,
call Cohen’s Home Furnishings who have kindly offered to pick
up and store all furniture until these items can be delivered to
the new homes of the residents.”
The $50,000
presented at the end of the benefit only includes funds raised through
ticket sales. Other contributions, such as those from Molson’s
and Piper’s, which donated $5000 in gift certificates, will
be tallied and announced in a few weeks. Other corporations are
encouraged to embrace this effort by contacting the Red Cross.
