Linus NJ, Inc. is a New Jersey based nonprofit organization that became
freestanding when the original, national group disbanded under a Colorado
founder. It was a long three months before a new President was chosen
but after our efforts in New Jersey had already gone solo.
There are over
1,000 volunteer blanket makers in NJ under our angel-powered mission,
60 Caravan of Love delivery drivers and countless "good news"
volunteers who share our passion and identify the need in our community.
To say that
we have a "few" Pay It Forward stories is an understatement.
100 of us went to see the movie together....it had deep meaning.
So, here's
just one of my favorites.
Kathy Z. is
a retired educator, two kids, 4 grandkids and was feeling rather
lackluster at the age of 58. She read about Project Linus NJ and
showed up one day at my doorstep. I welcomed her in, made a few
pots of tea and shared the Project Linus welcome mat. Kathy didn't
know how to knit, crochet or quilt....
As a result,
Kathy became the yarn and fabric angel to about 400 seniors who
have more time then money. This past October during our annual Make
A Difference event, Kathy made her first crochet baby blanket from
materials bought by her daughter.
She donated
that blanket (and about 10 others since) to a woman whose daughter
was suffering with stomach cancer. Where did this mother work? The
local yarn shop were Kathy buys her yarn.
Project Linus
NJ "pay it forward" stories happen all the time. I post
them in our bi-monthly newsletter, "The Blanketeer" to
keep the inspiration and spirit going.
7,400 handmade
"hugs" later...I think it's working.
Fondly,
Hillary Roberts,
Director Project Linus NJ, Inc.
