(Buffalo, NY, September 8, 2004) - - A Buffalo little
league program is still trying to pick up the pieces after a second
wave of vandalism that threatens its very existence. News 4 broke
the story Tuesday night. News 4's Marie Rice reports some generous
donors have stepped up to help.
McCarthy Park's sports programs have been hit again
by thieves and vandals.
The North Buffalo Junior Athletic Association is
in shock.
This time, thieves stole a thousand dollars worth
of food and supplies.
Louis Saad saw the heartbreaking story on News 4
at 11 Tuesday night and told me Wednesday he just had to help.
Saad, the president and owner of Eastern States
Sentinel Alarm Services in West Seneca, is offering to install an
alarm system at the park free of charge.
Saad said, "If the whole community gets together
and tries; each [of us]...[a] little bit in our [own]little way...it
will work."
Money made at the concession stand is what keeps
the little league football program running.
In April, the association discovered someone had
stolen 4,000 dollars worth of supplies and equipment from little
league baseball.
Saad says he'll even foot the bill for a monitoring
system at McCarthy Park, using telephone service or long-range radio.
Saad said, "Let's let the kids of Buffalo see
that we care, too."
Jason Maclin, owner of Chopafellaz Hair Salon on
Bailey Avenue in the city, is stepping forward too with the "pay
it forward" philosophy.
Maclin said, "Gatorade, Starbursts, whatever.
Candy. Whatever's been coming up missing. I'm willing to give 300
dollars. And I'm [hoping] for other businesses to come forward and
match me."
The Athletic Association's secretary, Michelle Martin,
is overwhelmed by the quick reaction from the community.
Martin said, "I called the president and told
him, and he's so grateful. Thank you so much to everybody in the
community."
Buffalo Common Councilmember Bonnie Russell will
