The Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts urges area residents to “pay forward” any good fortune they have.
In an effort to help residents become more involved in their community and its needs, the council will sponsor Pay It Forward Day on Nov. 20 at its new program activity center on Yellowbrick Road in Farmingdale, according to Kelly McAllister, membership development director of the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts.
“The goal of Pay It Forward Day,” McAllister said, “is to encourage the girls and the community to become more involved by exposing them to a wide variety of volunteer opportunities that reflect diverse interests and personalities.”
According to McAllister, the Girl Scouts is a national organization dedicated to building courageous, caring and compassionate citizens.
“To launch the holiday season,” McAllister said, “the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts has pledged to commit 200 hours of service to the area it serves.”
Pay It Forward Day, which will take place from 1-3:30 p.m., will help those interested in learning about nonprofit organizations that serve the community and provide information to potential volunteers.
Nonprofits scheduled to participate in the event include Centrastate Medical Center in Freehold Township, Habitat for Humanity, the state Department of Health and Human Services, the Monmouth County Park System and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, among many others.
During the event, participants can donate hair to Locks of Love, give blood for the American Red Cross and/or contribute food to the Open Door Food Bank in Freehold. Donations will be accepted from noon until 5 p.m.
The event will also feature activities and crafts for children ages 4 and up.
A $5 registration fee will cover expenses and craft materials. Girl Scout membership is not necessary to attend.
